Macroscopic elastic stress and strain produced by irradiation

چکیده

Abstract Using the notion of eigenstrain produced by defects formed in a material exposed to high energy neutron irradiation, we develop method for computing macroscopic elastic stress and strain arising components fusion power plant during operation. In microstructurally isotropic material, primary cause fields is spatial variation exposure. We show that under traction-free boundary conditions, volume-average always vanishes, signifying formation spatially heterogeneous state, combining compressive tensile deformations at different locations same component, resulting solely from radiation Several case studies pertinent design are analysed analytically numerically, showing varying distribution produces significant stresses ion-irradiated thin films, pressurised cylindrical tubes breeding blanket modules.

Connecting local active forces to macroscopic stress in elastic media.

In contrast with ordinary materials, living matter drives its own motion by generating active, out-of-equilibrium internal stresses. These stresses typically originate from localized active elements embedded in an elastic medium, such as molecular motors inside the cell or contractile cells in a tissue. While many large-scale phenomenological theories of such active media have been developed, a...

Free Vibration Analysis of Microtubules as Orthotropic Elastic Shells Using Stress and Strain Gradient Elasticity Theory

In this paper, vibration of the protein microtubule, one of the most important intracellular elements serving as one of the common components among nanotechnology, biotechnology and mechanics, is investigated using stress and strain gradient elasticity theory and orthotropic elastic shells model. Microtubules in the cell are influenced by internal and external stimulation and play a part in con...

Radioisotopes produced by neutron irradiation of food.

The use of neutrons for cargo interrogation has the potential to drastically improve threat detection. Previous research has focussed on the production of (24)Na, based on the isotopes produced in pharmaceuticals and medical devices. For both the total activity and the ingestion dose we show that a variety of isotopes contribute and that (24)Na is only dominant under certain conditions. The com...

Mutants Produced by X-irradiation of Spores of Chaetomium Globosum and a Comparison with Those Produced by Ultraviolet Irradiation

1. Mutants produced by x-irradiation of fungal spores of Chaetomium globosum have been compared with those produced by ultraviolet irradiation. 2. The most striking difference between the mutants produced by x-irradiation and ultraviolet irradiation is the absence in x-ray experiments of the K mutant which is produced in large numbers at short ultraviolet wave lengths. 3. A comparison is made o...

Biochemical and computational study of an alginate lyase produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain S21

Objective(s): Alginates play a key role in mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization, biofilm formation, and driving out of cationic antibiotics. P. aeruginosa alginate lyase (AlgL) is a periplasmic enzyme that is necessary for alginate synthesis and secretion. It also has a role in depolymerization of alginates. Using AlgLs in cystic fibrosis patients along with anti...
